Unit of Study: Pattern and Repetition
Subject: Art
Grade: 7th
The Big Idea:
Students will practice creating their own patterns and focusing on the repetitive motion of drawing them in order to fill an entire page.
Specific Essential Questions addressed in this lesson:
What is a pattern? What kinds of lines and shapes do we see in patterns? What does it look like when we're focused?
Learning Outcomes/Expectations/Objectives:
As a result of this lesson, students will understand that 'focusing' looks different for everyone.
As a result of this lesson, students will know that Zentangles are about focusing your mind, relaxing, and being creative.
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to design their own patterns and use them to fill an entire piece of paper.
Learning Activities:
Introduction/Opening (5-10 minutes)
Begin by showing a few example images of Zentangles. Explain that they will be coming up with their own patterns to fill their piece of paper. Ask students: what does it means to be focused? What does it mean to be relaxed? Explain that this project is intended to be about relaxing and focusing on the task at hand. Remind students that this is a totally silent activity, but that they may listen to music in headphones if they would like.
Demonstration (5 minutes)
For the demonstration show that they should be coming up with 10-12 pattern designs that are sketched out before beginning their final draft. When they are ready for the final draft, they need to come up with some kind of page-filling design (break the paper up into sections with some kind of design) that they will then fill their different patterns into.
Transition: Send students to seats to begin working.
Activity (30 minutes)
Student will work independently on this project during this time frame.
Closure (2 Minutes)
Have students clean up and put their work away for next class.
