WATERCOLOR RESISTS
LESSON PLAN
STUDENT WORK
Underwater Watercolor Resists
Fiona Black
Unit of Study: Art and Science
Subject: Art
Grade: Kindergarden
The Big Idea:
Students will learn about how water and wax resist each other by creating an underwater ocean scene.
Specific Essential Questions addressed in this lesson:
What kinds of animals would you find in the ocean? What kinds of plants would you see? What does the word 'resist' mean?
Learning Outcomes/Expectations/Objectives:
As a result of this lesson, students will understand that when you paint with watercolor over crayons, the wax in the crayon resists the water and causes the watercolor to absorb everywhere except where the crayon has been drawn.
As a result of this lesson, students will know that they can mix different mediums to create different visual effects and textures.
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to use several mediums at once to create an underwater scene.
Learning Activities:
Introduction (5 minutes)
Get students inspired by asking them what kinds of things they might find in the ocean. Do you know what happens when you paint with watercolors over crayon? What does the word ‘resist’ mean?
Demonstration (5 minutes)
Remind students of the paint dance! (Swish swish in the water, pat pat on the sponge, wiggle wiggle in the paint). Show students how they can use the white crayon to draw “invisible” drawings that will show up once you paint over with the watercolor.
Activity (25 minutes)
Have students work during this time, they can make multiple drawings if they have time. Remind students to draw with crayon first and paint with watercolor second.
Clean up (5 minutes)
Give students clean up directions (where work and materials should go).
