LESSON PLAN

STUDENT WORK

Manikin Figures

Fiona Black

Unit of Study: The Body and Figures

Subject: Art

Grade: 8th

The Big Idea:

Students will practice drawing on a larger scale and shading with oil pastels.

Specific Essential Questions addressed in this lesson:

How do we make a color lighter or darker? What makes some parts of the manikin darker than others?

Learning Outcomes/Expectations/Objectives:

As a result of this lesson, students will understand that they can mix white and black oil pastels with other colors to make them lighter or darker.

As a result of this lesson, students will know that the manikins helps visualize the proportions of a body for figure drawing.

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to shade a figure using oil pastels.

Learning Activities:

Introduction/Opening (5 minutes)

Begin by showing students the steps for this project; start by folding your paper into four sections and picking 4 poses for your manikin. Then sketch the four poses in each section, remember these are rough sketches. After you're done, take your second piece of paper and pick one pose to sketch larger, this time focusing on the shading. After finishing with that step, pick which color you would like to do your final in and get three oil pastels; the color you pick, black, and white. Practice shading them to create lighter and darker versions of that color. After practicing, you may begin your final drawing. Try to make your figure as big as possible on the page. You can choose to focus in on one section of the figure, or draw the whole thing.

Demonstration (5 minutes)

Show students how to fold the paper in four sections for the first step. Also briefly demo how to blend the colors together to get a smooth gradient.

Transition: Send students to seats to begin working.

Activity (35 minutes)

Student will work independently on this project during this time frame. Materials are on the front table for students to get when they're ready.
