LESSON PLAN

STUDENT WORK

Fashion Design Cutouts

Fiona Black

Unit of Study: Fashion and Art

Subject: Art

Grade: 5th

The Big Idea:

Students will discover how everyday life and nature can inspire fashion design and textiles.

Specific Essential Questions addressed in this lesson:

What kinds of textures/colors/patterns/prints do you see in fashion? What kinds of textures/colors/patterns/prints would you like to see? How can we find those textures, colors, patterns, and prints in our everyday life?

Learning Outcomes/Expectations/Objectives:

As a result of this lesson, students will understand that they can find textures, prints and patterns in everyday life that could be used for fashion design inspiration.

As a result of this lesson, students will know that everyday life and nature inspire fashion designers worldwide.

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to create their own fashion designs by finding inspiration in the world around them.

Learning Activities:

Introduction/Opening (5 minutes)

Begin by showing a slideshow with images of fashion designs and pieces that were inspired by everyday life and nature. Then show images of Anna Kulachen's Nature Dictates Fashion piece to show how they'll be using cutouts of clothing items to take images of how they would look using textures, colors, patterns, and prints from everyday life.

Demonstration (5 minutes)

For the demonstration show students examples of what their images should look like. Remind them to focus their camera if possible, and to keep the cutout framed in the shot. Go over the checklist [3 textures, 3 prints, 3 objects, 10 photos total].

Transition: Hand out cutouts, checklists, and passes and remind students what time they need to be back in the classroom.

Activity (25 minutes)

Students will walk around school and the courtyard taking images on their phones during this time. *Students who don't have a phone or camera should find a partner who does and work together.

Cleanup (10 minutes)

When students return to class, instructions for emailing/uploading their images will be on the board. Students should spend this time getting their photos to the teacher, handing in their checklists, and handing back their stencils and passes.
