Intro to Costume Design

Unit of Study: Costume and Set Design

Subject: Art (Elective)

Grade: 9th

*Lesson can be adapted to work with older students but materials and language may vary.

The Big Idea: 

 

Student will begin thinking about costume design and specific aspects of costuming in relation to specific characters.

Specific Essential Questions addressed in this lesson:

 

What is visual storytelling? How can we think about using clothes and costumes to tell a story?

Learning Outcomes/Expectations/Objectives:

 

As a result of this lesson, students will understand that costumes can tell story.

 

As a result of this lesson students will know that costume design is different from fashion design.

 

As a result of this lesson students will be able to start thinking about how they might design costumes for specific characters.

Learning Activities:

 

Introduction (5 minutes)

Introduce students to our first costume design lesson. [Where do you see costumes? What is their purpose? How is a costume different from our everyday clothes? What is the difference between fashion design and costume design?]. Show a slideshow with examples of costumes from media. Explain to students that they will be beginning to think about costume design by designing a costume for a character from a fairy tale through the worksheet.


Demonstration (5 minutes)

Show students example worksheet and walk them through each section.

 

Transition students over to their tables to begin working. Put example up on the board for all to see while they work.

 

Activity (35 minutes)

Students fill out their worksheets, and follow steps as they go.

 

Clean up (5 minutes)

Give students 10 and 5 minute warnings before clean up begins, then remind them put all materials pack in their place.

 

Closure (5 minutes) Invite students to share their work at this time.

 

Materials needed for the lesson:

  • worksheet [1 per student]

  • pencils [1 per student]

  • colored pencils [1 bin per table]
